Hard Alloy — Cutting Tool Material Still Expanding in Range of Use

(1) Minimize the brazing area as much as possible to prevent and reduce cracks, thereby improving the tool's lifespan.
(2) The welding strength is ensured by using high-strength welding materials and employing the correct brazing techniques.
(3) Ensure that excess welding material does not adhere to the head of the tool after brazing, facilitating edge grinding. These principles differ from those used in the past for multi-blade hard alloy tools, which often featured closed or semi-closed groove designs. The latter not only increased brazing stress and crack occurrence, but also made slag removal difficult during brazing, leading to excessive slag entrapment in the weld and severe detachment. Moreover, due to improper groove design, excess welding material couldn't be controlled and accumulated on the tool head, causing difficulties during edge grinding. Therefore, special attention should be paid when designing multi-blade hard alloy tools.

The welding material should have good wettability with both the hard alloy being brazed and the steel substrate.

It should ensure sufficient strength of the weld at both room temperature and elevated temperatures (as both hard alloy tools and certain molds experience varying temperatures during use).

While ensuring the above conditions, the welding material should ideally have a lower melting point to reduce brazing stress, prevent cracks, enhance brazing efficiency, and improve the working conditions for operators.

The welding material should exhibit good high-temperature and room-temperature plasticity to reduce brazing stress. It should possess good flowability and permeability, with this property being especially important when brazing hard alloy multi-blade cutting tools and large hard alloy mold joints.

Hard Alloy

The welding material should not contain elements with low evaporation points, to prevent the evaporation of these elements during brazing heating and affecting the weld quality.

The welding material should not contain precious, rare metals, or elements harmful to human health.
